Did you know?
Elvira's real name is Cassandra Peterson. In the late spring of 1981 producers were looking to revive a weekend horror show which had ended six years earlier. They decided the host should be female (the original show's host was male). Peterson auditioned for the part during a casting call and won the roll. With help from best friend Robert Redding, Cassandra created the sexy punk/vampire look. Show producers rejected her 1st idea - looking like Sharon Tate's character in The Fearless Vampire Killers, Or--Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are In My Neck.
Elvira rapidly became popular, due in part to her tight-fitting, low-cut, cleavage-displaying black gown. She also brought satire and sarcasm to her commentary, all in a "Valley Girl" accent, complete with ending each sentence like a question. Peterson enjoyed slipping in the risqué double entendres and was not afraid to joke about her cleavage. Sex appeal, humor, and good-natured self-depreciation helped her popularity to soar with late night movie audiences.
Elvira grew from a somewhat obscure cult figure into a lucrative brand. She associated with Halloween costumes, comic books, action figures, trading cards, pinball machines, Halloween decor, model kits, calendars, perfume and dolls. Her popularity reached its zenith with the release of the feature film Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, which was released in 1988.
